Can't Decide

My DH is pulling the "this is your area" act so I need you ladies! I have one who is ready for PT and the other is a follower so I think he'll pick up eventually. I'm not to worried about that. I'm dragging my feet b/c we'll be driving to NC in a month and a half (11-12 hrs w/3 potty stops). I don't want to miss the opportunity to potty train Ryan when he is ready, but am afraid of how long that trip will last with newly potty trained kids. Has anyone been through this? Would it be bad to put a diaper or pull up on them for the trip? I just know they won't be able to "hold it" until we can stop every time. :help:

 

I think you'll be surprised at how well a child who is ready to PT will pick it up. A month is a pretty good length of time. My Sarah picked it up right away and was doing fantastic with peeing in the potty when she was ready to PT. Allison didn't PT until several months later, but when she was ready, she picked it up right away, too. Sure, it's a little nerve racking, but I think within a months time you'll know how well they are doing and whether or not you need a pull-up fo the trip or not. Also, you may have to put in a few more potty breaks for this trip to be on the safe side, but I wouldn't do the pull-up if it's not necessary.

 

In the beginning we did use pull-ups when we went out because I just couldn't handle the public accidents yet :blush: But I would schedule more potty stops as well as taking a potty with you. I have had to stop on the side of the highway many times for the girls to potty before and they have been trained well over a year.

I would also potty train the one that is ready! You don't want to lose those trainable moments!!

My kids all do fine with wearing a pull-up at times like a long car ride. However, none of them like to pee in them! I like to have them wear it so I can be a bit more relaxed about accidents. They don't want to pee in them because they don't like the wet feeling anymore, or they are "big kids" now, or whatever their reason is!

For quite a while I always made sure I had an empty water bottle with a lid in my car. One of my boys was notorious for waiting until the absolute last minute and then announce he had to go potty! Peeing alongside the road is one thing, peeing in the parking lot (or drive through!) is another. That water bottle saved me many times, and my son thought it was great! (Almost too great! But this phase only lasted a couple months, and we had very few accidents in the car. My other son has never had an accident. Not once since we ditched the diaper. They are so different!)

We PT'd late (around age 3), but I did not hesitate to put them back in a pull-up for things like that. In fact Sarah will be wearing a pull-up (at her request) when we travel at Thanksgiving, even though she's been fully day-trained for almost a year.

They like the security of it, I like not having to worry about getting them to the potty on time, and it never seems to have any consequences later (other than perhaps a day or two of having to tell them "No, we are not traveling today and you cannot wear a pull-up all day.").

 

So when they tell you they pooped, they are ready?

Mine tell me twenty minutes BEFORE they have to poop. I still don't think they're totally ready yet.

I don't want to rush it.

Isn't 25 months early? Esp for boys???

My boys are TOTALLY "ready" if that is what "ready" means..

AND, fwiw, i wouldn't put a pull up on them AFTER you do bite the bullet and PT. Maybe at night, but I wouldn't make an exception even for the car ride ESP when you just start PT.

I say if you think he's ready, GO FOR IT!! :clapping: We started pt'ing 5/27 and left for vacation 6/10. Since we were in the early stages, I put them in a pullup in the car. It didn't cause regression for us at all. I told them it was for leaks in case we couldn't get to a bathroom in time. But, we pulled over every 1.5 hours so they could pee.

 

To each his own, is correct. I am asking a question?? Because MY boys are 25 months.. I am asking experienced folks if 25 months is early for BOYS? I always thought it was.. I am not telling Meg that. ASking for myself. *our kids are the same age and they are male. *(males train differently than females like you have.)

I probably could've trained Aiden at 25 mos, but I was hesitant & lazy (I'll admit it...I like the convenience of diapers). But, when he started showing signs of regression (ie stopped asking to go, stopped telling me when he had went, etc), I figured I should do it before I lost my window! So, at 26.5 mos, we went for it! He was completely dry during the day within 2 days! He's done GREAT...better than I ever expected! Conner was NO WHERE near ready. I had no plans to try to train him, but he was adamant to follow in Aiden's footsteps. So, I put him in Pull Ups (I was sick of putting his diaper on & off every 15 mins) & he trained himself! Within 2 days, he was in undies! He's had a few accidents, but I think that's mainly my fault. Aiden trained so easily (I rarely have to tell him to go...he just goes on his own) that I forget to remind Conner to go. When we do that every now & again (I'd say he goes on his own 75% of the time), he stays dry...naptime, too.

I was shocked. I didn't expect my boys to train this easily OR this early. I initially had plans to train them next summer when they were closer to 3. But, since the readiness signs were there, I figured I'd try. They were able to pull their pants/undies up & down on their own, verbalize when they had to go, etc. If they couldn't have done those things, I would've waited longer (again, my laziness!).

I still use Pull Ups for 'just in case' moments. For example, their Halloween costumes were a chore to get them in & out of, so I put Pull Ups on in case we couldn't get them undressed in time. Both remained dry & did great, but the Pull Up is more for MY peace of mind. We have a 90 min car ride this weekend & yes, I plan to put them in Pull Ups. Both of mine KNOW Pull Ups are diapers & know they aren't supposed to pee in them, so I guess I'm lucky there. They haven't shown signs of confusion with it. They actually usually cry when we put it on, so maybe one of these days I'll listen to them & brave it myself!

You know your kids the best. If YOU think they're ready (and you are, too), then try it. If it doesn't work, try again later. No book or doctor or anyone else can tell you when to do it...they can just suggest when they're showing signs. So, ultimately, it's up to you! Good luck with whatever you decide! While I feel undies are less convenient to me, they are cheaper !
