On the advice of our doctor I started the boys on rice cereal yesterday. Austin took to it no problem, Miles got a face full first before he figured out what to do, but both seemed to really enjoy it and were swallowing well. They only got about a tablespoon each yesterday and today.

But fussy! Holy crappers... they were both extremely fussy afterward and have been hard to get down to bed the last two nights. I suppose it could be due to something else, but it seems too coincidental that I started solids with them. Is it too early for them? (they're 5.5 months) or is rice just not for them? I might hold off on giving them cereal tomorrow and see whether it makes a difference.

Either way, it was fun watching them learn something new... but I don't want to force them to eat if it's going to make them that cranky!

Try oatmeal single grain if rice cereal constipates them.
My Danny boy cut 2 teeth a 5.5 months. I was shocked.
It don't think you made a mistake. Probably a coincidence.
It's so hard to know what to think when out little ones keep us guessing.

I would just stop giving it to them for a few days & see if the problem corrects itself, then try again. If you get the same problems again, you can be more sure it is the cereal causing it.

It could be upsetting their tummies. I agree with what Tina said. Stop the cereal for a day or two and see if the fussiness continues.

if its the rice that is causing the fussiness then just stop giving it... its really not very nutritios anyway... we didn't even start solids until closer to 8 months and mine caught on very quickly and enjoyed all the veggies I started them off with. actually I started them with avocado (a fruit...) and they loved it and its full of nutrition and you just have to mash it up... no cooking.

Well, no rice today and I can't say the boys are in a great mood, but they're at least not screaming! So I guess we'll hold off for another few weeks and try again. Maybe next time I will start with some avacado or something. They sure like to eat, but I am not happy with the result.

This is what I did because the same happened to me. I waited a week and everything was just fine!

You also don't have to start with cereals. None of my kids liked cereal, I went pretty much straight to fruits and veggies at 4 months with them :)

They mainly recommend cereal because it's supposed to be easiest to digest and less chances of an allergic reaction, but if it's bothering them, then maybe something else would work.
