My guys both have clear runny noses and are really irritable and not sleeping well. I have it too, so I think we're all just fighting colds, but how do you know if it's something more serious? No one has a fever. I just don't want to trek to the ped if it's just a cold.

I usually would make an appointment if there is fever. In these cases, listen to your intuition, if it's something you are not comfortable with, call your pedi for advice. My BF gave me the advice, sometimes paying the copay for nothing serious is worth the peace of mind. When my kiddos felt the this way, I ran the humidifier (we have the Vicks one that you can put the vapor pads in), did the saline drops and nose sucker to help them feel better. Hope everyone feels better soon

Usually, if it's just a clear, runny nose with no fever, I won't take them in. If they seem to be in any pain at all, if they develop a fever, or if it lasts longer than I think is normal, I will make them an appointment. I agree with Nancy, you just have to follow your gut feelings. I hope they feel better soon!

For a runny nose, I would ride it out and see if they get, hopefully better, and if not(fever, ear pain, bad cough, etc), I would take them in. It sounds like a cold that hopefully won't develop into anything else! Hope you all feel better soon!

Thanks Ladies. I've been running the humidifier during naps and overnight and using the saline drops too. Acutally, the boys seem better off than me. (I'm all sinus-y and stuffy.) Hopefully it will run its course and we'll be on the mend soon.

DD, DS, and I all have bad colds here. DS and I both had fevers last night, but we took some medicine and the fever is gone. DD is sleeping really poorly (up most of the night), so I think that's making me feel even worse. I don't think we'll call the doctor unless there's a complication. I hope you all feel better soon!

For me peronally, I'd call the doctor if:

    1) Degree of illness continues (without getting better at all) for more than 5 days
    or

    2) they develop a fever (then I'd call the doc for a consult, not necessarily drag them in as they could get sick at the doctor's office :)

    or

    3) Babies appear to have trouble breathing or other complications, such as quick breathing, retractions, acting lethargic or not being able to wake up, blue tinge to skin, etc

    or

    4) babies seem inconsolably irritable

    or

    5) adults with the illness develop any body aches- which should warrant a call

I'm not a doctor, but think for right now you guys sound fine. A little sick, but fine :D I know you knew people who did not fare well with the flu, but I think you guys have an icky non-flu respiratory infection
