I have read Vitamin D is a good defence in trying to prevent the Swine Flu and the Flu in general. The boys got their flu shots today but we are opting out of the H1N1 Vaccine.

I know this is something need to disguss with the Dr. but I was curious if anyone has given their child Vitamin D.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks!

I haven't heard of that..but I'm just curious why you opted out of the H1N1 shot? My SIL works at our local health department and is pushing us to get both shots for the girls and us (regular and H1N1). I haven't really done any research..mainly because I just rely on her expertise since she's been doing it for so long. So just out of curiousity..was there a particular reason that you decided not to get it?

I'm not yet convinced that the vaccine is safe. The boys are UTD on all their other shots. However I'm going to leave it at that because I dont want to start a debate.

We have supplemented with Vitamin D periodically and I think it actually helped to shorten the severity and duration of their most recent cold (I amped up the Vit D as the symptoms began). It is supposed to be excellent for the immune system - recently discovered to be comparable to if not better than Vitamin C for boosting the immune system. It has a whole host of other health benefits, too! Good stuff.

We used the Yummi Bears brand (the only kind my boys will take), but I am sure any quality supplement would be worth your while.

Our ped recommended Vit D supplements for general health -- I wasn't aware that it was supposed to be good for the immune system specifically. He said most small children don't get enough Vit D because they aren't exposed to enough sun (in this era of SPF 50). We give our kids a multivitamin that includes Vit D.

We have not supplemented but the girls take a multi vit and drink fortified milk w/ extra Vit D. I try to boost foods w/ extra vitamin C in the winter months as well.

Call your pedi---there are some vitamins that if you take too much can be harmful. I dont know if D falls in that category or not.

We use yogurt w/ probiotics to help w/ immune system. Although both my girls get sick often.....I like to think it helps!

We are getting flu shots---not sure on H1N1 yet. Pedi has not yes/no it- but we will go by his suggestion.

I hope your boys have a healthy winter!

In normal day to day activities, I only put sunblock on my girls faces. Leaving their for-arms uncovered most of the year. A lot of vitamin D supplents are hard to absorb or not quite the right kind (I think I read Vitamin D3 is the best?).
Recent research has linked Vitamin D deficiency with a whole host of health problems.

There are tons of new data coming out about the overall good of Vit D so it can't hurt!

I give the boys Lil Critters Calcium and it has Vit D in it. They also get Lil Critters Fish Oil. I may start back with Vit C/Echinecea they make this winter.

Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't meaning the question as a debate, I was honestly curious because I hadn't researched and I was just curious if you had read something or heard something about it. Sorry if it sounded like I wanted to debate the subject.
