How many bottles a day are you doing?

We fed them every 3 hours at that age, but I don't think they were taking 6 ounces at that point. When mine went up to 6 ounces, we did every 4 hours.

I didn't see that your boys are a month old. My girls did not consistently take 6oz at that age. We were feeding them every 3 hours. Around 2 months we switched to more on-demand feeding during the day. I felt this actually helped them sleep better and longer at night. At about 2 1/2 months they were sleeping through the night.

I realize they are young but they seem to want to eat. It isn't always 6, but it is almost always 5oz. I am trying to figure out if they need less bottles yet.

I wouldn't cut back their bottles unless they aren't draining them all. Around the 6 wk mark there is a huge growth spurt, which is probably why they are eating more all of a sudden. They will probably slow down in a week or so, it's a long growth spurt usually.

You really don't start cutting back bottles until they are consistently not draining a particular bottle. So for example you feed them every 3 hrs, but their afternoon bottle they are only drinking an oz or two. Drop that bottle and space the rest of the day's bottles out to maybe 4 hrs or so. If they cry in hunger earlier than the 4 hr mark, they may not be ready to drop a bottle completely.

My boys increased on formula very fast. I do not remember how much they were taking at that point, but you cannot over feed them. I do remember that we were feeding every 3 hours. My boys are over 18 pounds, so they are big boys. But DH is over 6 feet tall and I am 5'10"....

Right now they eat 4 sometimes 5 bottles, 9oz each. Plus rice cereal once a day!

Actually you are more likely to overfeed a bottle fed baby than a breastfed one :) When a breastfed baby is done, they pull away, and mom doesn't force them to eat more. When a bottle fed baby is done, and pulls away, some parents do try to force them to finish the bottle. That's when overfeeding can occur.

But if your baby is happily draining their bottles themselves without showing signs they are full or finished, then no, you aren't going to overfeed them ;) But they can overdose on calories and gain weight too fast if they eat a lot, which is where well child check up's come into play, to keep an eye on that early weight gain :) My dd was 19.2 lbs at her 6 month appt, and her curve no longer "curved", it was heading vertical, so I now add a little extra water to her bottles, add more solids in and cut back her amt of formula to try to keep her from putting on too much weight too fast!

I am guessing this is a growth spurt because they are snoooooooozing today.

My boys have been consistently having 5-6oz bottles since they were 6 weeks old. Here is our schedule:

    Feeding times:
    7a
    10a
    1p
    4p
    7p
    10p

and then one of my boys still wakes up a 3am to feed.
