What time does your 2 yr old go to bed?

What time do you put your 2 y/o to bed? What time do they wake up? How long of a nap do they take?

We are starting to have the twins wake up earlier and earlier and earlier. I am beginning to think they are getting "too" much sleep. The recommended sleep for 1-3 yrs olds is 12-13 hrs (including naps). We usually put ours down for bed at 8pm. They use to sleep until 7am and nap for 2-3 hours. Doing the math, that is 13-14 hours of sleep. DS has been waking up at around 6:15-6:30am for a month or so now. DD woke up at 3am last night, she didn't go back to bed until 5am and was up again at 7am. She took a 3.5hr nap yesterday. I am wondering if I should not only limit there nap to just 2 hours and also push there bedtime back a bit. Is 8:30-9pm to late for a 2 yrs. old bedtime? I am a SAHM, so they don't have to get up early in the morning. However, I feel like a bad parent if I don't have a reasonable bedtime for them.

    Advice Please.....

Laura, I think they need more sleep at 2! I think those might be suggested, but since each child is different. But they could be getting some 2 yr. molars or having a growth spurt that could explain some of the night wakings.

You can certainly TRY to limit the nap to 2 hrs. That would be a good jumping off point. I do know that when I tried to wake my kids from naps it was a NIGHTMARE!!!! :faint: So, I'm hoping you have better luck!! LOL!

What time do they nap? I wouldn't probably let them sleep past 4:00 - that's just me. I found that my 7:30 bedtime was hard if they slept past 4! They go through phases, so it's going to change again!!

They usually go down between 12:30-1 and I never let them sleep past 4.

I am apt to think this is just a phase! I would stick with it and see what happens!! Check those teeth! Those molars are a BEAR!

I think DS is definately getting in the molars...drooling like crazy, chewing on stuff, etc....

How long does the "phase" usually last? Can a phase last for a month? Can the molar thing last for that long?

at 2 y/o we put them to bed at about 6:30pm and they woke about 6:30-7am. Then they napped for about 1.5 -2 hours hours a day.

Now at 3 y/o they still nap and go to bed about 7:00 and get up the same time.

It can take a while for those molars to come in. The waking thing will go away! Who knows how long it will last!!

My 28 month olds go to bed at 7pm. They fall asleep sometime between 7 and 7:30. They're up by 7am most days. Sometimes it's 6:45 and sometimes 7:15, but they're pretty consistent about getting 12 hours of sleep a night. They nap from noon - 2:15. About half the time they wake up from naps on their own and half we wake them up. If they don't wake on their own, we'll let them sleep until 2:45 because they must be extra tired.

So that's about 14 hours a day. 12 hours total would certainly not work here!

I have a post with sleep questions, too!

My DD is 21 months. She wakes up around 6AM, but sometimes as early as 5 or later at 6:30.

Her naps are inconsistent right now. If we are out in the morning, she falls asleep in the car. So, sometimes she takes 1 longer nap (2 hours) and sometimes she takes two naps (about 1-1 1/2 hours each). She goes to bed around 7PM.

I don't know if limiting their sleep would help, especially if it's molars. Molars can take a long time to come in, so it may be a while. Have you tried giving ibuprofen?

Bedtime here is 7:30, and they sleep until about 7:30. (Give or take on either end, but it's always about 12 hrs.) Naptime is around 2 or 2:30. DS now takes naps on some days (and if he doesn't fall asleep, he has quiet time) - his naps are usually around 45 min, but can be up to 2 hrs. DD is the queen of naps: she'll usually nap about 2 hrs, sometimes more.

12-13 hrs sleep total would definitely not be enough for my kids! There are some days now that DS could manage on that am't of sleep, but there are still days he needs more, and DD always needs way more than that.

Mine are closer to 3 but going to bed at 7 pm, when they just turned 2 they were going to bed at 6.30 pm. They wake between 6.30 - 7.30 am, no matter what bed time. I don't think 2 yo should go to bed at 8.30 - 9.00 pm (in general), also I don't think it will do any good. Sleep begets sleep and allowing them to sleep less, won't make them sleep better and longer in the end. I would possibly look at an earlier bed time. My oldest went to bed at 6 pm until the twins were born (2 1/2 years old). From 4 months onwards she would sleep 13 hours straight, never had any sleep issues with her. And even though the twins are not that perfect, an early bed time reduces overtiredness and makes them sleep better in general. Molars ... I wouldn't have a clue whether they have them or not (I should check I guess), it definitely hasn't influenced their sleep.

Mine hardly nap these days, but in order to secure their bed time, I won't have them nap past 2.30/3.00 pm (with a 1 pm bed time). Always did that, also with my first.

My oldest is 5, still going to bed at 7.30 pm, she needs it more than ever, her school bus leaves 12 hours later ...

My boys are going to bed a little later now. It was 8pm on the dot, but now its more like 8:30pm and they get up around 7am-8am. Naps start at around 1pm -1:30pm and they sleep for about an hour 1/2 to 2hours. I have tried getting them up if I think they are sleeping too long for a nap but it never turns out well so I let them sleep! I stay at home with them so there is no need for us to have them in bed at 6:30pm or anything like that...
We are having a horrible time with molars right now! Not sure who has how many b/c they will NOT let me look and I stuck me finger in there one time (and the last time!), OUCH! so hopfully it will end soon!
    GL!
    ps
I just noticed that our kids are only 3 days apart!

My kids go to bed between 8 and 8:30 and sleep until around 8 am. They typically nap about 2 hours in the afternoon. Sometimes naps stretch to closer to 3 hours, but not often.

OK....knock on wood, DS has slept through the night the last 2 nights. YEA!! :woo: DD is waking up every other night. So, sleeping is somewhat better. I knew DS was getting his molars. It just seems like it has lasted FOREVER. I wasn't sure about DD. DH checked the other day and sure enough, she is too. I think that is probably our source for the sleeping issues.

Just wanted to give you all an update and :thanks: for your replies and suggestions!!

My boys sleep from 7 until 7:30ish (between 7-8) every night. So, 12-13 hours.

I find that naps are constantly in flux for us. They were at about 1.5 hours each day, now it's back to about one hour. Sometimes 2 hours, but that's rare.

I do think molars can influence sleeping quite a bit. We do teething tabs and Tylenol at bedtime as needed, sometimes for over a month at a time on & off when they are teething. It seems like it can take a long time for those teeth to break through!

 and best wishes for sweet dreams soon!!
