are they identical or fraternal!?

Did your identical twins have seperate amniotic sacs? Mine did and all through my pregnancy I was told they were fraternal. It also looked as if they had one placenta. At birth, one of my twins had a couple genetic abnormalties so the neonatologist wanted to make sure they weren't identical. They do have the same blood type and the single placenta turned out to be two placentas fused together.

I'm so curious if anyone else's story is like this. To this day the girl who did my first ultrasound (at 7 weeks pregnant!) and all of my ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy says they are fraternal. I also saw a perinatogist several times and he said they were fraternal. They seem to think two sacs automatically equal fraternal, but just simple studying on the Internet proves that isn't true! It doesn't really matter to me... I'm just so curious.

They are both girls and almost 7 months old. Anyone have any insight? THANKS!

There are many people on this board who have twins who had their own sac and placenta. I was told they were fraternal throughout the whole pregnancy. I tested them at 2 years old and found out they were ID. Post pictures and I think you will get a good idea from the responses here! The people on this board are usually right on!

ID twins can definitely have their own sacs & placentas. Post some pictures so we can see!!

I am leaning towards ID after seeing picture #21. It is hard for me when they are not side by side. Do you have any more close ups of them together.

Do other people have a hard time telling them apart? Other family members?

This is a tough one, but I am also leaning toward ID. They do look so much alike....

Everyone has a hard time telling them apart except close family. They think they resemble, but know little quirks about each twin to know the difference. I think they look very different.

Oh shoot! I dont know! The first one, could go either way. The second one (great picture by the way), it a little too far away to tell!

People who did not see us often, had a hard time telling my boys apart. Some family members often mixed them up but like you, most family members could tell. Face shape was one of the biggest differences. Do they have the same eyes, nose, toes?

Parents of ID twins usually always think their twins look totally different.

Cute girls! Boy this is a tough one. I'm thinking ID, but I would definitely recommend getting them tested. Our boys turned out to be di/di ID with a fused placenta. When they were 4 months old we decided to get their DNA tested. I'm so glad we did. Now I have an answer for everyone who asks. And an answer for the boys so they will always know. It didn't matter either way to us either what the results were, but I did want to know what type they were. I used www.dnasolutions.com I highly recommend them. I think the price has been upped to $130. We paid $99.

    Welcome to TS!!!

I think they look identical to me but I would get the test just so you know. I heard from other ID Mommies that while it ultimately doesn't matter, its nice to know. :)

:wavey: another set here who was told all through preg. they were identical b/c only one placenta. At birth the placenta was actually 2 fused. Boys have same blood type and look so different to us. Ryan had IUGR and Jake was crowded into my ribcage so their faces and weights were very different. I decided to wait until their eyes changed to decide whether to test or not. By 1 year they still had blond hair and blue eyes (DH and I have brown hair, I have brown eyes and DH has hazel). After another 6 long months of debating we finally did the DNA test (same one Pam did) and they are indeed Identical! Most people can see a difference in them but it's not enough sometimes. We tell people that Ryan's face is Round and after that most can tell them apart if they are standing next to each other.

Your girls look id to me!

We are having the same problem here. All through pregnancy and after we have been told they are identical. The placenta wasn't split equally so one twin is significantly smaller in size and weight right now.

They share the same exact birth mark and blood type though so we really aren't sure. To us they look very different. The delivering doctors were 90% sure they are identical but we didn't disect the placenta to find out.

Maybe some day we'll get a DNA test to find out. In the meantime I'm just happy to have them!

they look identical to me. I have them same story that you have heard from everyone else. I was told identical during pregnancy and then they looked at the placenta and said it was fused. We did the dna test and mine are identical. It is nice to know one way or the other. Your girls are adorable. I am from Arkansas. Where in Arkansas are you located?

I was told nothing either way during the pregnancy because my doc wouldn't say since they were both boys. When they were born, I was told fraternal because they were di/di (fused placenta). However, I haven't tested mine, but everyone gets them mixed up all the time, so I figure I'll be testing because I think mine are identical(as do most of the ladies here who have answered many of my posts asking this same question). Welcome to TS!

I JUST did a DNA test on my boys. My whole pregnancy we were told ID because we thought there was only one placenta. At birth we found out there were 2. They both have the same blood type. Sure enough they are Di/di ID boys!

I also used DNA solutions and would highly recommend them. The price is now 140, but they were super nice and I had my results in about 2 weeks!

I was told the same thing throughout my pregnancy because there were 2 sacs and 2 placentas. After the girls were born, they looked so similar. After finding out their blood type was the same, we opted to get a zygosity test done. Turns out they are indeed identical!

My girls are identical and each had her own sac and own placenta. The placentas fused as you described. All through the pregnancy I was given the correct information, that when your twins are di/di the only way you can know before birth that they are fraternal is if an ultrasound reveals one is a boy and one is a girl. Otherwise, chances are higher that they are fraternal but you won't know until birth.

What are the genetic abnormalities you spoke of? Do they both have them?? just curious. I'm not 100% sure on this but they look very close to identical. You are going to need to test :)

I am surprised that anyone would tell you that they were for sure frats. My OB said the only way for sure to know if they are frats is they are B/G twins. My boys were in separate sacs and had their own placentas and still no one was willing to tell us that they were frats, even though at my u/s you could see one baby had a lot more hair than the other. Turns out my boys are frats (and both have the same blood type as well) - which I thought all along during pregnancy. If you are not sure I would definitely get testing done - I couldn't stand not knowing!!

Thanks to everyone for your opinions!!! I'm dying to know. As I said before, it doesn't matter, but I'm curious! Since the pathologist said the placenta revealed they were identical, I'm going to go with that. I think my Doctor is old-school and things two sacs automatically means fraternal!

As for the genetic problem, Macie has Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome. It's rare. Most of the cases with BWS is in identical twins as the problem mostly occurs when the egg splits. After seeing more than one geneticist(with one specializing in BWS) we have learned although its very rare for one identical twin to have a genetic disorder and the other not, with BWS that is almost always the case. We did have Makenna tested for it for peace of mind and it was negative.

Thanks again for all of yalls thoughts! I'm loving Twinstuff a LOT!
