I've decided to wean my boys off their pacifiers, and am trying to do it in phases, days, naps then nights. Any good tips or ideas? I've only done if for half a day and am ready to quit. I've just read that it's a lot easier to do before they hit 6 months rather than waiting.

How often do they use it? We never really gave the boys pacis but around 4 months they didn't seem to like anymore but they needed something...so we gave them their babies (the little blankets with animal heads). Can you give them something to replace it with? I would start by just leaving it in the crib and then slowly stop offering it at naps and probably nighttime will be easiest bc they are used to not having it:) Good luck!

I am not sure if it would help. but...
I never had problem with pacifier with my older DS .
but later on when friends ask how he gave up I just try to rememnber everything because we didn't do anything special as I think.

I like to buy him new paci and as soon as he start teething we bought him paci for that and before halloween I saw the cute paci with boo ghost which glow at night and red devil so I bought them both. when I got the I notive that this plastic part is very heavyto keep inthe mouth but I still give it to my son. might be couple of weeks later I notice that he doesn't use pacifier as he did before. and a little bit later on he gave it up.

after thinking about all of that I think it was hard to keep it in his mouth and we never plan to wean him from paci at that time. so might be because of the no presure and heavy paci he gave up very easy.

this is just an idea for you.

    Hey ADL,
I don't have any great answers, but I'm right there with you!!! My boys are just about 5 mos old, and we decided this morning to start weaning them from the pacifier. I like the ideas so far of keeping them in the crib, and also changing which one to give them. My boys still take the green soothies and are not impressed with the harder blue ones.... Maybe we'll try that.

Hopefully we can support each other through this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My sister in law told me that she cut the sucking part of the pacifier when she weaned her kids off of it. That is what I plan to do. It seemed to work; her two older kids dropped it right away because it didn't feel good anymore.

Wow! There are some overachievers out there! I never even dreamed of weaning my son so early! He's two, and I just took it away....no problem at all. When he was younger, I would slowly limit time to only naps, bedtime, and carseat. Then I took carseat time away about 2-3 months ago. Then I took it away altogether a week ago, and it's been easy as pie! I don't think you have to worry that much about taking it away that early...many kids have them longer. But if it works, GO FOR IT! My son didn't STTN until he was a year old, so I held on to that pacifier for dear life! Then when the twins were born, I knew there were so many changes going on. I know it's best to wait for the right time.

I also limited to just naptime/bedtime (as I did their loveys) and after a month or so, Ryan didn't even want his anymore. Jake on the other hand will never fall asleep without it. Sigh. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Well, good luck to you. It's just sooo tempting to give up escpecially since I'm not 100% convinced I'm not traumatizing them. Let me know how it goes.

When my DD was 1, the pedi said to take it away - he was fine with it until then. I basically just took it away all at once - maybe I was being mean. She seemed to be okay with it after a few times of fussing. Good luck!

I know I was told to give them by 9 mo. or so... but... we never did. I am still worried that they would want to self soothe with their thumb... so I'm keeping the paci for naps/night and sometimes carseats...

I hope to just cut off the ends when we do go to give them up. but for now, they go to sleep so nicely with them... though once we do wean them, I'm sure I'll be wondering why I didn't do it before!

    good luck.
