I saw an article in one of the weekly parenting emails I get (already deleted it or I'd post the link) about making sure your kids are getting enough fiber...they recommended 2g more than their age, so for mine, 3g...a day. We've been using multigrain bread for their toast and sandwiches at 3g a slice!! Plus the tons of veggies they inhale, brown rice, sweet potatoes...and I wonder why the poop so much! Do you think I'm going overboard with the fiber? I know the recommendation was for people who give all white bread and not a lot of veggies so it was a minimum, but I'm feeling guilty about maybe giving them too much! I actually just switched to a different bread with only 1g so that should lighten it up a bit. DH and I are both almost vegetarian and the LOs love their veggies, too. I started with the whole grain foods when they were little(r) and had reactions to all of the baby cereals...somehow they were ok with breads, but not the baby cereals. Yikes...they have at least 3-4 BM each day...do you think that's bad???

My guys poop 3-4x per day but I never thought this is not OK. Our pedi said that if baby is healthy and eating well then they should poop after each meal.
    I would not worry.

I didn't think there is such thing as getting to much fiber unless they have diarrhea. If there normal is 3 poops a day then I'm sure it's just fine.

You've done so well, I'd keep with the wholegrain bread. They get so used to the white and dont go back. I think you are doing an amazing job. I have a visitor right now and her 6 year old just seems to consume candy constantly with the odd yogurt and ohhhhh and flaxseed oil in juice just to make it all better. Sometimes we read too much instead of using our own judgement. I've also read very active kids can have more frequent poops, my good friend has this. I'm sure each of mine have had 2-3 poops today so no worries.

My two usually get about 3-4 grams of fiber a day. My DD poops at least 3x a day and my DS struggles with getting out his one a day. I think you are doing good with the fiber!

I agree that there's no worries about too much fiber. I would venture that those numbers you read were minimum, not maximums.

Agreed! Since adults should strive for at least 25 grams of fiber daily, I would think that 3 grams at that age would be a minimum. Fiber is great not just for "regularity" but also helps to normalize blood sugar and control cholesterol. Most adults get far too little fiber, so getting your LOs used to a higher fiber diet will serve them well as they get older. :good:

You're building good habits! I couldn't tell you exactly how many grams of fiber my kids get but it's much more than that minimum. I prefer a high fiber diet for myself and I see no reason to reduce their intake. They poop adult quantities twice per day now but it used to be smaller amounts 3-5x per day.

The way I see it, what they know now is what they are most likely to find appealing as adults. As long as everything is moving along (it will if they drink enough water) and they are gaining weight properly, I see no reason to be concerned with it being too much.

Well my kids poop just as much as yours if it makes you feel any better :)
If I change any less than 6-8 poops between the two of them, they must have had a babysitter that day!

    Just keep feeding them healthy!
