I am noticing today that Aurielle is spitting up white with black. Earlier it was all dark brownish and now it seems to be white with black in it. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, but didn't really eat anything. They are FF and on prevacid for acid reflux. I'm trying to contact the doctor now, but I can't seem to get through. Anyone else have any experience with this? TIA

They have only eaten bananas once a day for the past 3 days, so I don't think it's that. Still waiting on their call. The message said it could be up to 24 hours before someone got back to me....ug

Bananas can make their spit up odd colors, but I'm not too sure about black.

that is NOT acceptable! you may have a sick baby on your hands and need info sooner than later, i'm not trying to freak you out, but there is no way i would be able to wait for 24 hours for a call back on something like this. i would call them again and explain to the receptionist that you need to talk to the nurse ASAP.

There is no receptionist. I have to leave a message and they call back in the order received. We are on state care and this is how things work. I know it is unacceptable, but we have to deal.

oh, that stinks! well, hopefully they will listen to your message and get back to you soon. i'm sure it is probably nothing, but i am terrible at playing the waiting game...

Is there any kind of nurse line in your area that you can call? I know we have a number here where we can call & talk to a nurse (not at our doctor's just in general for everyone) and they can give advice as to whether we really need to see someone or not. If not, as long as she doesn't seem sick, just hang in there I guess, but that seems like a long time. Who do you call when you need to make an appt? Do you not get a person for that? I'm not over familiar with the process in the States.

When I think black, I think old blood....I would get her in asap.

I hope it's nothing as well, but DH said that yesterday that yesterday she was spitting up more than normal and it was projectile, so I'm not sure. I have been telling their ped that I think they need to see a GI specialist and she didn't think it was necessary. I hope they call me back soon, she seems out of it today.

I'm with Becky, I automatically think blood when I hear black in the digestive system. I would try to get her in as soon as you can.

 I would take her to the ER if you are concerned and aren't getting anywhere with the ped Christine. Let us know. :grouphug:

ETA...Is she still having plenty of wet diapers after yesterday's more than normal spitting up?

This right here combined with the presence of what could be old blood in her spit up for more than a day warrants that she be seen today. If that means urgent care or ER than that's what it takes. The fact that it's brown/black if it is actually blood means it's a very slow bleed and may have even resolved on it's own but you don't want to let it go.

The other possibility is that if she is mobile, she's finding things that she then puts in her mouth. Hopefully that's all it is but I wouldn't let the possibility of a GI bleed go. Rule it out and then look for other causes. Keep us posted!

She is mobile, but doesn't put anything in her mouth that isn't her toys. we just called the ER and they can't give any advice until we speak with the pedi. she is sleeping right now...when she wakes I think we are taking her to the ER because they still haven't called from the pedi's office.

I think that's a good decision. I'm sure she's probably fine, but just to be on the safe side I'm glad you are getting it checked out.

When you said dark brown/black, I think bile. Just my two cents. I've seen my share of bile when I had issues with my gall bladder(before getting it removed) and would get sick until there was nothing left to puke up except bile.

I also live in FL but in the miami-dade area. Our pedi also switched that automated leave a msg and we'll call u in 24hrs so i stopped going there, kids should be a priority to me thats just being an irresponsible office. Simple.

One of my girls had a black tongue once (she's not the one with acid reflux) but of course i freaked out!! and it turned out to be thrush/fungus.

And it doesnt matter if u have medicaid/kidcare/medipass. If ANY mom should suggest any concerns to any pedi about their child that pediatrician should always listen, like when i told mine that i think our lil one should see a PT and GI specialist she completely agreed with me as a matter of fact these were her words "you're the one mom and u spend most of the time with her, if u think she should see a PT im gonna listen to you"

doesnt matter if u have medicaid, i'd call and change pedi ASAP and give her a piece of your mind

I'm with the other Mommies.. I think old blood also, and am relieved to hear that you are taking her to the ER ... its too bad you can't find another pediatrician for her, because that one sounds awful :(

Keep us posted. I think the ER is a good decision. One other thought...what color are their cribs? I freaked out when I found black specs around BK's mouth and turns out, she had been chewing on her crib.

We are at the doctor's office now. It is definitely related to her reflux and they are calling the GI specialist to see if he wants to do the camera thing. Update soon...

Thanks for all your concern, but we can't change doctors. This is the only pediatrician in our area that takes medicaid. Plus, we would would have to wait for open enrollment which isn't for another 6 months.

Thanks for the update, I had just popped in to see if you found out anything. I hope you get some definite answers soon!

Oh, and it really doesn't seem like you need a new doctor anyway, they managed to see you relatively quickly. Just frustrating to have to wait for the call back!

We have to up her prevacid dose from 3 mil once a day to 7.5 mil twice a day. holy cow that is a lot of medicine! luckily, she doesn't mind taking it...phew! she goes in to see the specialist next week. from there he will decided if she needs the camera down her throat. thanks for all your support ladies!
