Not bearing weight on legs/feet

Hey everyone,

I've posted before about my concerns over Ruby Jayne scrunching her toes up and not putting any weight on her legs when in her jumperoo or when i try and get her to stand on my lap. We had our 9mth review with the health visitor a month early as he was up to date with all his visits and thought he would stop by as i'd expressed my concerns when i saw him at playgroup. Anyway eight gain, height and head circumference are all tickety boo for both of them, he is happy with how we are progressing on solids and that they roll and sit up unassisted . He ummed and aahd over Ruby's feet and said maybe some physio therapy would help? He wants to do a revisit in 4wks to see if there is any improvement, if not he will put the request through for physio - he said there is no point in sending her for it now as it may not get approved because we are early doing the 9mth reveiw. So not sure what to think really? I have soon realised that SO much can change overnightwith babies never mind 4wks, so she could well start doing it before we know it and the physo might not be necessary. He didn't say why she could be doing this but seems to think it is alot to do with her being IUGR? I have been fretting over why she is doing it and thinking allsorts of things.. google is bad! I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or experiances simliar to this?

I read up on the topic of IUGR in my peds nursing book, so I could be supportive.

IUGR babies usually catch up to their peers by two years of age in both size and development.

My boys were born 5 weeks early and I was told something similar.

My older boys didn't walk until between 12-14 months old. I would feel bad because other babies did, now it doesn't even matter. They are both good in school, what they did as babies is now irrelevant.Time has a way of fixing things.

 

Thanx so much Patty! I like what yo said about time, it was just a few months back that we were saying in "time" Ruby would be as big as her sister and she very nearly is.

Always something to worry about with kids! :faint: :hug: Anyway, Justin, my first, did not bear any weight at all on his legs until he was 8 months old, and he walked right at his first birthday. So, it's possible that everything is ok, but I would definitely do the physio if it's recommended at your 9 month check up.

 

Hiya Becky :wavey: Isn't there just! So your Justin was quite late to bear weight on his legs yet he was an early walker,that is good to hear. Daddy reckons she is just a lazybones.. i wonder who she get's that from :tease: Alot can change in a month though, so hoepfully she will get there in her own time but if not physio it is. It's hard not to compare her to her sister who is literally into everything, Ruby seems so happy to kick back and laugh at her doing crazy stuff like trying to climb into Mummy's TV cabinet lol Maybe she is just giving me a break, one moblie baby is bad enough :crazy:

 

So I don't know if it has anything to do with IUGR. Mine were born 37wks, 2days. They are now almost 8 months. Both were healthy and did not have IUGR.

Here are Lia's symptoms- Roles from tummy to back but NOT back to tummy. can not scoot. has hard time holding head up while on tummy. roles toes and feet in. roles fist in. does not put weight down to stand up. has hard time grabbing things. does not move. she was not "baby talking" but just the other day started to so I can take that off the list now.

Our dr has already put her in therapy. The problem here is that there is a three month lag to get in so we are still waiting.

Im not to worried. As of now, she is still making eye contact and wanting to be social. As long as she keeps that up I wont panic. If that starts to slip away I'll worry, but tell then I don't think there is anything to worry about. It's just in their muscles and they need a little therapy to catch up and then all will be fine.

 

I'm betting she gets there on her own soon enough, but it's great that you noticed it & are right on top of getting her evaluated if it becomes necessary. Nothing wrong with a little physical therapy if it's needed!

 

My DS would only use his arms to get around at 8 months, we called for EI evaluation and they determined that he did not need services...he started crawling around 10-11 months and was walking by 14 months...so it is good that you mentioned it to your doctor and they will keep an eye out and give physical therapy if needed.

 

I bet she will get the hang of it. Please keep us posted on how it's going! It's hard not to worry about those kinds of things, though. DS still hates tummy time and that makes me wonder if he will ever crawl.

 

Alex's feet were so turned upwards when he was born that in the NICU they had an orthopedic consultant. The doc said that it isn't unusual with a breech baby, especially a multiple. Alex had basically found a spot in my tummy that he liked and camped out so he was pretty ball-like. At almost 7 months (5-1/2 mnths adjusted), Alex still has his feet quite turned and he uses the side of his feet in the jumperoo, but his physical therapist doesn't see any problem with it and says that as soon as A starts trying to walk, his feet will straighten out.

 

i'm guessing that she just hasn't figured it out yet. my DD was the same way at close to ruby's age and i was getting a little worried because her brother is a tank and very strong. he was bearing weight at like 3 months... but anyway, all of a sudden she just got it! one day not a chance and the next day it was like she had been doing it all along.. stay away from google.. it is evil when you are worried about your LOs...

You have a great attitude! I'm sorry that Lia has to wait for therapy but very glad that she is on the waiting list.. there is no stopping you putting her through her paces now is there? Thanx for sharing this, it sounds like your Lia is very much like Ruby.. she still doesn't roll from back to front either. Like you say the fact that she is responding socially is a great sign that it is just delayed developement an d nothing serious or someting that can't be improved!

Really? I bet that looked very cute :wub: I would say this last month Ruby's upper body strength has come on so much, she used to be on her front but not use her arms at all.. now she is doing pushups so she is getting there blessher! Thanx Nancy!

Thanx Amber, i will do! Don't know where my nerves would be without this forum at times! I don't call my friends or family for support i come on here lol DF thinks it's hilarous! Ruby has never been a fan of tummytime ether but since she has more of an interest in touching things we can distract her from her position for alot longer with toys.

Thanx Rebekah! I'm glad Alex has improved and that the outlook for this issue is positive!! Sounds like he is doing so well! Ruby was in many positions throuhout my pregnancy but the last 3months she was breech so maybe this has contributed to the habit, i say habit because it's not that she can't do it.. she just doesn't when her feet hit a hard surface.

lol i know me and google have a love hate relationship! Yeah i think you may be right, she will get it. I reckon if Amber wasn't so into things i wouldn't bat an eyelid. Df seems to think it's fabulous, he wants her to stay little and helpless forever, he treats her like a doll lol Thanx Ohjojo
