Which tricycle would you recommend for 2 y/o birthday?

I was thinking either this Schwinn or this Radio Flyer with handle to give them for their 2nd birthday.
Which type do you recommend? The lower to the ground or upright trike?

    TIA!

I'd rec the one with the handle is the handle is detachable. My brother got the girls these for their second birthday, and while they are super cute, they have a hard time peddling and my back is killing me from bending over to push them.

My oldest had the Radio Flyer that you posted and I really like the look but it was awful. If he took any type of sharp turn it would tip. My friend has the Schwinn and they seem to like it. It did rust easily. We got the twins Kettler Oceana trikes. We got them when Pamper Points had good rewards. Even though the twins are 3 and starting to ride their big bikes without training wheels, they still jump on the Kettlers. They have pretty good resale value on Craigslist too.

We had those too, and they never rode them.

We have one of these. We bought it for Josh's 2nd birthday(he's now 5), and it's still going strong!

As a side note---I would take them to TRU or Walmart, etc and have the TRY out different kinds.

One of my DDs never learned to ride her more 'recumbant/low' style trike w/ a pushbar. She simply did not have the core body strength to push forward on the pedals, she did sort of learn to do the upright Radio Flyer my neighbor had- but never to her satifaction. WE ended up getting bikes for Easter (12" w/ training wheels) and she finally has movement, though she still can not go up hills or down an incline. Note--she has mild CP and low trunk tone. But I wanted to let you know to TRY them---we gave them to the girls for their 2nd birthday and they really did not use them much---her normally deveopling sister didnt even quite figure it out (pedal /push) until past age 3.

The push bar is nice--save your back!!!

We have the Kettler trikes. They have an optional extra handle that is removable. I agree that you should try them before you buy. Our guys can't really use them properly yet, but do like to scoot along with their feet!

They've been on trikes before, they love them! They couldn't reach the pedals but they just sat there on it and fought over it a few months ago when we went to a crawfish boil. Thanks for the advice, I'm looking into one of those kettlers with the handlebar.

This is what we had.....great w/ a push bar!!! The basket is a plus too----they always had 'something' in there.

2 of my neighbors had these and gave them to us after their kids grew out of them. They are great and have been through many kids. The push handle is a must if you have any incline at all!!

    Good luck!!

We had Kettler tricycles and they are the best! So sturdy and well made. They do cost a lot but you could get a used one on CL for much cheaper. That's what I did and it was practically new.

We have Kettler trikes, and both my kids (even the more athletic/coordinated one) found them hard to ride until they were at least 2.5. They seemed to do much better with the more upright trikes at daycare, even though it always looked more precarious to me.

Honestly, if I had it to do over again (and if we hadn't gotten the trikes as hand-me-downs anyway), I would skip the trikes entirely and get them Strider bikes.

But if you are going to get trikes, yes, the handle is key. We had one with, and one without, and DH and I were always arguing over who had to push the one without.

We have the Schwinn trikes and the girls love them. However, they got them for Christmas when they wer 2.5yrs old and couldn't pedal on their own. They can now, but that's only been since they turned 3. The Schwinn is great b/c it has a low center of gravity which pretty much prevents tipping, but it's a little harder to do than the Radio Flyer. Even though they couldn't pedal for a while, they pushed with their feet and were just as happy. :) HTH

We got them the Schwinn for their second birthday, and it was just too big. They do great on it this summer (at age 3). But last summer they were not used.

If I were purchasing for the second birthday I'd buy one with a push handle. We have one I bought at a garage sale and my two year old neighbor does great on it plus she can be pushed.

Honestly, they couldn't ride them till close to 3, so it was a 2 yr. old gift that was a big pain for a while! We have Kettler's but I don't know that they are totally necessary.
