The boys are still in their infant carriers. The Pediatrician said to keep them in them for a few more months. I am guessing at our 18 month appointment, he will give the ok to move to another seat,

What is the next type of seat that you use?

We were given two but I am not sure if it is what I need and if it has all the necessary clips/parts.

Can you share what type of carseat y'all used after the carries, and if you have pictures that would be wonderful!

That's odd... How big are they? Most infant carriers are not for babies over 22 pounds (I guess 21 to be sure with clothes etc).

We use a convertible car seat (Britax Marathons). Actually switched them at 7 months because we were tired of carrying those seats everywhere. We were all happier when we switched really. In theory once your kids are 12 months and 20 pounds you can just use a regular forward-facing seat, but it's much much safer to have them rear-facing as long as possible (at least until 2 is the recommendation now). So we got a convertible seat that rear-faces until 35 pounds (they'll probably outgrow it in length first though) and forward-faces until 65 pounds, so it will last us a very long time.

For the rest, there are regulations so all seats should be safe really, the prices just vary depending on ease of use mostly. The most important thing is to make sure the seats are installed correctly, but you can call your local police station and ask them where to get them inspected if you're not sure (depending where you live it can be really hard to have it done though).

I don't have pics handy right now, but we use the Evenflo Trimuph Advance...our DD has the Sophie Ann and DS has the Liberty. They were easy for my DH to install and easy to get the kids in and out of. We still have them rear facing right now. The seats we have can also be rear facing until 35 lbs but we will probably turn them forward at 2. My kids did not cross the 20 lb mark until 18 months.

In her siggy it says that they are a little over 14 pounds so not odd at all.

After we got out of the infant seats we had them in the Evenflo Triumph Advance. Love that seat. :good: We went out and got a Britax Marathon for my older DD because I still wanted her to be in a 5 point harness longer than 4 years old and fell in love with them too. So we also have 3 Marathons. Both are great seats.

My girls were in their infant carriers until 15 months and we only took them out then because they were reaching the height limit, so I don't think it's weird at all that her babes are still in their infant seats. My girls are just now 20 pounds, so they still could be in them if you go by the weight limits. Anyway, we have Evenflo Triumph Advance seats. We like them a lot. They are still rear-facing and will probably stay rear facing until they are 2, if not a little longer.

Her siggie weights are from almost a year ago. I would suspect that they are a bit heavier than that!

That said, if you want a good forward facing car seat I'd go with the Graco Nautilus. If you want rear facing for longer I'd go with the Evenflo Triumph advanced like the PP's have stated. It is a GREAT carseat and goes up to 55lbs maximum.

You are right that my siggy is rather old. I need to update it. At the last doctor's appointment the boy's were barely 19 pounds. My pediatrician also mentioned that the new recommendation was the be rear facing until 4 - has anyone else heard this?

I live in Norway and the recommandations here is rearfacing to 4years, but most kids get too long legs to sit comfortable enough before they reach 4. We turnd our oldest at 3years 3 months. It's really dangerous having them forward facing too early...

I have heard this, but I have no idea how it would be possible. The car seats we're looking at only do rear facing up to 35 pounds. My guys are pretty small, but I imagine there are plenty of children who exceed 35 pounds well before they are 4 years old!! And what about their poor legs? My boys' feet touch the back of the seat, and they're still small enough to be in infant carriers.

I'm going to leave my boys rear-facing as long as possible, but I don't know that we'll make it to 4!!

Really? I hadn't heard that. I had heard 2. We are still rear facing (only 20 pounds) and will be for quite a while, but our Ped hasn't even mentioned 4 years old. I'm not sure I can handle it that long.

Unfortunately I don't think most kids would be able to be rear-facing until 4 here... I think in Europe they make seats that rear-face to 40 pounds though.

I have 2 marathons for my twins, I think they are great seats so easy to install and work great. I have heard the 4 year rear facing recommendation here in Canada but I will probably keep my kids rear facing just until they are 2 or so, My older sn will be turning 4 in November and he is still light enough that he could sit rear facing in the Marathon.

I also haven't heard four as a definitive age, but over one year old, recommended to two years and longer if able.

And OP, even though your kiddos are only 19lbs, I'd watch for height limitations as well for the infant carriers. We used ours with the girls until they were 1, and then even though they still had a couple of lbs to go for the weight limit, they had reached the height limit for the seats.

I wasn't ready to switch them forward facing so we did get the Evenflo Triumph Advance DLX and love them! The girls were rear facing up until the spring after they turned two. Now those seats (minus the height issue, which may be a factor again...) the girls are good until 50lbs!

our twins are lightweights too... around 18 & 19 pounds at 15 months, hopefully they've gained something in this last month. We are still in our Graco SafeSeats and they go to 30 pounds and are able to be taller too. Of coure the inches don't matter on that part b/c it depends how your child's torso is. Ours will be outgrowing the carriers in the next few months for the height part too.

I have been looking at (and even bought but took back because I didn't want to waste the 1 yr warranty since we weren't using yet), the Evenflo Symphony. I really liked the straps that didn't have to be rethreaded and the latch attachment had nice little handles to help work it easier.
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3012746 this one even becomes a booster seat - up to 100 pounds...

Since then Safety 1st came out with a new caresat Complete Air - its only available at BabiesRUs/ToysRUs. It also has a neat quick fit harness system, and side impact air to help their heads.

anyway, not sure if anything else new will come out to influence my decision before I need to make it or not.

One other item I've been trying to fit into the equation is the seats that are skinnier - which might enable me to have 3 across... to be able to bring a friend along, or at least enable an adult to sit next to them if necessary.

The Evenflo is a goo 20" across, but the new Safety 1st one I mentioned is only 18" and that would save 4 inches between both of them.

hope I didn't confuse any matters... good luck!

I switched mine to the True Fits by The First Years when they were about 1 year, but I still have them rear facing and will keep them that way for a while. Mine are still small and DD only 19 pounds. Our Infant seats were Graco's that went to 30 pounds but I just couldn't handle them anymore.

Anyway the True Fits have a good safety record, are really reasonable priced and can stay rear facing until 35 pounds. We love them and the kids are very comfortable in them.

    Good luck with your search.

I read that the recommendation is rear-facing til 2. We got the True Fits by First Years and love them. They seem really comfy and they have tons of legroom rear-facing. I'm going to try to rear-face them for as long as possible. They are happy for now, so why change it.

The AAP now recommends rearfacing until 2 yrs and 30 lbs. Mine are rearfacing and will be as long as possible!

To the OP, if you want to switch to a rear facing convertible you can- it might be more comfortable for them. I have the Britax Marathons.
