True, good point. Its sad to look at it though, I dont have any wants, I am way more content then I need to be with what I have, The only want I have is to do well, thats not to much to ask for is it? :p

Going to Ireland and Iceland doesn't count as a want? :p

For the moment I actually forgot about that! lol! Yes they are a want/need. the want to travel and the need to find myself :p

But you could probably find yourself just as easily in Broken Hill :p

Since we're talking about the difference between wants and needs, can I complain about people who think you always need to give people presents? :p I don't need a present and I certainly don't want a present. I know people have an emotional attachment to exchanging presents but I always thought it was mostly a waste.

LOL! no, no thank you! I am not a country bumkin, I did country life for 3 years too many! lol. Dislike the dirt :p

Have you found the place where you are content? mentally and physically?

We're all typing at the same time and I'm getting phone calls while replying, I'm not keeping up. lol

So you don't really have a good reason? and here I was giving you the benifit of the doubt.

I actually completely agree with you here, it's not just the games it is the overall influence from all people in a child's life.

 exactly that is what we always say if not anything else (like common logic) if he did basic maths he would knew he was being an idiot.

Good point but I never like playing with dolls either so maybe that is it ;)

I agree with you, I certainly don't think computers are evil but the way a lot of society is using it today is not healthy imo. I'm not attacking technology itself but how it has influenced humans and how it's causing unhealthy habits with certain people

In an aeroplane (preferably business class) :p

Not liking it because it is evil is a perfectly good reason :p They aren't very environmentally friendly though (especially those pre-ripped versions people buy now :p)

Technically, he would need basic biology as well :p

Technology hasn't influenced humans and it hasn't caused anything :p Stop blaming technology for humans' faults :p

This is the first year I have spent as much as I did. Normally parents buy something and I claim I helped :p
I dont get my other sibling(s) anything, they dont remember my birthday - neither did my parents last year :( lol

No, it is a want. The only needs people have are shelter, food and health and shelter and food only within reason (not a 22,399 room castle for example). Anything above that isn't a need.

 this thread is getting too serious for my current liking today. I'm not in the mood for deep discussions (I know shocking! Usually I love them but I'm tired!) So I'm not going to go into this discussion with you just now. Bring it up next week with a new thread or in the Anything thread ;)

True it is human nature (and was there with and withouth technology), I don't deny that! Technology does encourage the passive nature of humans though. Isn't it better to have things that encourages the positives of human nature instead of the negatives?

Yet another discussion I am not particularly in the mood to go back and forth on currently :p

 That sure makes "the talk" much easier!

So I can have a 22,398 room castle and its a need :p

Just joking!! I do know the difference, been doing it for two years for Community and Family. :)

  18. TwinPeshi

    TwinPeshi Well-Known Member

    You started it :p

Computers encourage the positives of human nature :p Human nature just happens to make the negatives more visible :p

I disagree. I would seriously question my father's and my mother's intelligence if my mother was running IIS [technical background: IIS is Microsoft's http/web server software which is very crummy when compared to its main competitor Apache]

I need to sleep so I don't get the flu from Codie...

I need to sleep because it is nearly 1 in the morning and I don't particularly like to be awake in the early hours of the morning (unlike Brenda). :p

It's not the only clothing item that is environmentally unfriendly tough (not that that changes anything) and I don't wear pre-ripped jeans!

:rotflmbo: True, guess there's no hope for the guy...

Stop being so difficult and literal. If you weren't so adament on defending technology you'll realize we think similarly about the human nature and habits that are so negative :p

Technically yes one can survive on the basic physical needs (the ones you mentioned) BUT I think humans mental and emotional needs are just as important as the physical needs. One also needs mental stimulation and emotional stability to survive. I don't think one would live for long just on shelter, food and physical health. Human contact is important, feeling fulfilled is important, being sane is important etc. I agree that most people don't know what things will make them emotionally fulfilled so they try to become happy by gathering materialistic things (and there are even some people that can truly be happy in that way) My point is I think the basic needs you mentioned is a very small part of what humans really need to be wholly healthy. Health isn't just in your physical condition.

    Not all of it :p

 parents level of intelligence and skills differ so the anology of running on different softwares can make sense.

    Sleep tight everyone

Computer games: We didn't have a computer untill we went to high school but when we did I think the only games we played were Packman or Alladin. But I wasn't much into computer games.

Board games: We always have loved playing Rummikub, this was definetley our most favorite boardgame.Others that we liked to play were Ganzenborden(game of the goose?), Cluedo, Mens erger je niet( do not get angry?), Childrens Monopoly, Yatzee.
Also alot of different cardgames as Pesten,Eenendertigen and Ezelen.
No idea how all of these games translate to english though.

We were also outside alot and had a ton of games we used to play there, anything from hide and seek to jump rope and knikkeren(marbles). We had alot more than that though but these were a few of my favorites.

Me and Frances never played with dolls. I maybe had two dolls growing up and never used them.
I did love my stuffed animals and still have most of them on a shelf in my room.

My favorite clothing items. I have no idea. It differs alot. I recently bought a new jeans skirt which I really like and gotten me some new shoes that I love.
Often it is the entire combination of clothes that I like together.

I don't own a cell phone. :p If someone wants me, they have to wait till I'm near a landline. I do have OnStar in my car that has a phone in it but I've never had a call in on it. I can tell by the way I use it to call out that I would use a cell way too much. I carry a camera with me most of the time so thats take the need for a camera phone away too.

If you take someone as ancient as me at 34 and think about technology in my life, when I was little, no regular people had a computer, no regular people had a microwave, no regular people had remote controls on their tvs. Things that are totally taken for granted today. I can remember having to use a can opener to open a pop! (I am very old) \

But then, 40 years ago who would have imagined instant communication between Australia, the Netherlands, South Africa and Canada?

  23. Twinrific

    Twinrific Well-Known Member TS Moderator

Oh Joyce we also loved (and stil do love) Rummycub and Yahtzee. lol notice that we were/are quite the gamers. It's the way our family spent quality time together (playing games)

I do own a cellphone and am embarressed to say I probably won't be able to live without it but I got it originally because Telkom (only landline company in SA) is absolutely useless! I wish I wasn't so attached to my phone though! It's a gift and a curse!

Kendra stop it! You. are. not. old! You're my brother's age for goodness sake! :slap:

And yes I particularly enjoy being able to talk to people all over the world. Technology isn't bad inherently it depends on how you use it (or how much you allow it to control your life! ;))

I agree you are not old! you are only as old as you feel :) plus age is just a number.

    Have a good/day everyone :)

I know, but I don't like jeans so that makes it a lot worse :p

I know but being difficult and literal is half the fun with you Brenda :p

I thought you didn't want a detailed serious technical discussion :p

    ------

Joyce, Richard and I also played with Rummikub and marbles as well (I always lost at marbles :p).

I tell people that I don't want a mobile telephone because if I'm not at home I'm not in a position to speak to anybody anyway so why waste money on a mobile. I dislike speaking on the telephone to begin with, why would I want to encourage that type of behaviour? :p

Yes actually but it was expensive. For my grandparents and parents it was a rare event and had to be carefully scheduled if it was going to be in any way afordable.

I am frustrated with the Board of Studies and their silly questions. I have been doing past papers and came across the following question

Leanne has recently returned to work part time after taking 12 months maternity leave following the birth of her first child.
Which of the following is a strategy that Leanne could use to help balance family and work commitments?
    A. Using internet banking.
    B. Preparing a weekly shopping budget
    C. Accessing before and after school care
    D. Obtaining membership at the local gym

    Which would you say?

This question is idiotic! The correct answer according to the BOS is A, I said C and dont understand why, CAFS teacher I went and seen today and asked her why it would be A and she agrees C would be the correct answer.

    Anyone have ideas why A?

Its driving me nuts and I have to wait until monday to talk to her again and see what the other cafs teachers on the board shes on says!

    Study study study :bump:

C is the only one of those answers that makes any sense at all and even that one is borderline. While I can see how Internet Banking would help save time (instead of going to the bank), what does that have to do with work?

  33. Twinrific

    Twinrific Well-Known Member TS Moderator

What subject is that exactly codie? I agree, very strange!

Well I'm just dropping in to say I'll be scarce next week (final moving! Can't wait to have it done and over with!) I'm also going to a wedding tomorrow in Mpunmalange so I won't be here. Can you believe it's only 7 more weeks until my own wedding?

Anyone else have some big plans for the weekend or next week? Joyce how are you? I miss you!

  34. TwinPeshi

    TwinPeshi Well-Known Member

The only way A would make sense is if you assume that banking is not a "family commitment" in which case reducing time there would increase the time available to apply to family commitment.

I don't think C makes any sense either though because if you could have work/life balance by simply sending children to school/nursery/etc, then the obvious way to improve work/life balance is to not have children at all.

Exactly the bos are idiots! the teacher and I had a big talk over it as she gave us the answers but I didnt look until after I did it and seen it was wrong and was like hmm how? banking needs to be done but it doesnt help balance work and family.

    See why I'm going nuts!
