Our occupational therapist has recommended that my one son get evaluated by the Occupational therapist for some behavioral issues that he is displaying. I brought up my concerns to her and she is concerned as well. So, we will be getting him evaluated. Can anyone tell me what to expect with this evaluation and if he does qualify for therapy, does anyone know what they will do with him,? Just curious, thanks!

Is this through EI? What types of behaviors is he displaying?

Jackson was referred for OT based on his behavioral and sensory issues when he was about 10 months old (I think - don't remember the exact age). Insurance denied covering it and we weren't concerned enough about it to pay out of pocket. I really don't know exactly what they would have done, but I assume it would have involved helping him to endure sensory stimuli more healthily without going into "overload" so easily. He has gotten MUCH better with age. Good luck - I hope it helps.

oops...I meant to say that the developmental therapist referred us to get evaluated for occupational therapy. The behavior that he is displaying is 'normal' behavior for aan almost two year old but it's the excessiveness of it that is concerning. He throws temper tantrums all day long, with head banging when angry. He fights getting changed (clothing and diapers) to the point where it's a total nightmare. Everyday...all day long. The developmental therapist is concerned there could be some sensory things going on. I don't know....I know it's not going to hurt to get evaluated though! Anytihng to stop this crazy behavior!

Definitely sounds like she wants to look into sensory integeration concerns through OT. I work with the transition from ECI to public school and our ECI has behavioral therapy as well. Do they offer it in your area?

DD sees and OT for hyposensitivity (requiring excessive amounts of stimulation).
She does all techniques through play with the children. She always is kind enough to include the other children and comes to our home where DD is most comfortable.
She brings age appropriate sensory toys - bouncing and crawling for proprioceptive stimulation, swings and spinning toys for vestibular, and brushes, spiky, vibrating and other tactile sensations.
She also teaches techniques so we can meet her needs on a daily basis. It has been very helpful. Good luck!
