I HATE SAND

DH is in the process of building the state's finest dry beach/bonfire pit and he went ahead and put some sand in the sandbox that's built into the boys' swingset. They've been in the sandbox all day and it's nice for me to have them distracted since we're having a party tomorrow and there is much to be done. However, the sand is evil. I've tried to burn into their brains that they must get brushed/washed off before coming in the house but they only have so much notice when they need to poop and I don't want to press my luck. The sand is damp and it's really sticky. SO, for those with sandboxes, how long did it take for the novelty to wear off?

We have the world's largest sandbox... the previous owners were apparently building a walled garden and stopped 1/4 way through. So we have an 80 foot by 20 foot sand pit with three foot concrete walls that's a flight of stairs down from the rest of our yard. We've lived here since February and my girls ask to go play in the "sandbox" at least twice a day. Every time we go outside they somehow make their way to the sand and end up with it all over. Fortunately for us, the sand is pretty dry since it rarely rains here, but we still have sand everywhere. I have started vacuuming nightly.

So... at least in our case... the novelty hasn't worn off in over six months. Sigh.

We don't have a sandbox, but there's a giant one at preschool, and Sarah plays in it every day (for a year now). Amy only plays in it sometimes, but still manages to get sand in her shoes nearly every day. It is pretty dry, though. We just make a point of taking shoes off right inside the door, and it doesn't usually get everywhere.

We got rid of ours because we couldn't keep the cat out of it but they play at school ever so often mostly other kids dump sand on Jessy for some reason :pardon:

You just have to vacuum a lot! :( They love the sand box. They may not play in it daily, but they do like it! I keep baby powder by the door and step out and brush them off with baby powder. It gets the sticky sand off!

We have one....the twins LOVE it....for me, not so much. For us, we still have an issue with throwing sand and caking it into each others hair. Despite TO's and removal from the sandbox, it is a constant battle that drives me nutty!!!!! It is a win-lose situation. The win~ keeps them entertained for a long while. The lose~ never fails someone ends up in trouble and tantrums result from being removed.

My kids LOVE the sandbox. The girls no the rule of shoes off before coming in the door (they take them off on the deck) and then I make sure and brush them off before coming in the door. I do have to vacuum a lot though!

Hmm...we've had our sandbox two summers in a row and it's still the hottest activity at our house. I have a bucket of soapy water at the back door and do a little dunk and rub before the kids come in.

And we vac three times a week at least!

we leave one of their old training potties by the back door so there's no excuse for running in the house before being rinsed off. That worked great. We've had our box a couple months and they still love it.

I live 1 house off the beach, so we have sand here EVERYWHERE, every day too. As a PP said, Baby powder works wonders! I also make them wash their feet off before coming inside.

We've just come back from five weeks at the beach, so I have had LOTS of sand. We take our shoes off at the door and vacuum a lot. The sandbox still hasn't lost the novelty. They love playing in sand.

I know exactly what you mean. I tried for the longest time to not allow my husband to fill our sandbox. I finally broke down and said fine about three months ago. My boys love it, love it and play in it every single day. The novelty has not worn off. I find sand everywhere, even in their bed. I think it gets in the roll of the bottom of their shirt and then dumps out when they go down for a nap. I guess I will take the trade-off. My boys play so nicely together in the sand box, the fighting ceases and I would rather have that and vacuum, sweep a little more. But, I still hate sand.

I hate, hate sand! I would love to get rid of our sandbox. The baby powder is a great idea, though!

My biggest problem is that it has been a rainy summer and the sand is always damp because we don't have a cover. So, they sit in it, get sand in their diapers and then they have a wet, dirty butt as well.

We are going on vacation in a few weeks to the beach, so I'm going to go nuts. ;)

I was going to say the same thing...baby powder works like magic to get the sand off!!

    That is a fantastic idea!!!

Mine love their sand table too, and they have had it for 2 summers now. I don't think their fondness of it is going to wane anytime soon!
