Our boys are 9 months old. A friend told me she gave her son nutri grain bars at this age as part of breakfast. So I bought some and was excited for the boys to try them. I happened to look at the ingredients and there is a small amount of honey in them. I read somewhere babies should not eat honey. Anyone know anything about the honey idea?

I heard both ways on the honey - that it's okay if it's in something like that because it's cooked and that it's not. I tend to think the former is true, but still held off until a year.

A similar snack that mine LOVED that I don't think has honey (if it does, I totally screwed up! :)) is Fig Newtons. Still a favorite snack at my house.

I don't know about the honey but I gave my LO's nutrigrain bars, they love them.

I was never really sure about the honey thing myself. I was never able to find any definite info on whether it was okay in foods that had been processed. I don't think cooking it makes a difference because it's a botulism issue and I'm pretty sure botulism isn't killed by cooking. But I could be wrong. :pardon: Anyway, I never knew for sure so I just avoided it until they were older.

oops! i have been giving nutri grain bars...

i just looked up the ingredient list on the gerber fruit and cereal bars, no honey in there, so i guess that is what i will switch to. i hadn't bought them because i thought i was silly pay more for the same type of item just because it is made for babies, but i guess it is worth it to avoid the honey...

Kashi has some of those kind of cereal bars that my boys love. Not sure about honey in those though. When my boys turned one, honey was still okay after one, but has been changed to after 2. My boys eat it about 3x's a week. They won't eat jelly so they eat PB&honey sandwiches. To be safe, I'd check out the other cereal bar options, but I'm pretty sure mine at Nutri Grain around that time too.

  8. Mine have Nutri Grain bars and they LOVE them. They honey thing has to do with sopres in the honey ( I took Microbiology in college) A small amount will not hurt them mixed in with stuff like that. You should not just give your kids a bunch of honey!! Nutri Grain Bars are ok:)

I didn't notice the honey in them.. I started giving mine nutri-grain bars about two weeks ago. They seem to be doing fine with them :)

I think it's fine if it's in something like the Nutri-Grains. My kids loved them at that age.

The likelihood that the nutrigrain bars will contain honey that is infected with botulinum toxin is extremely rare. But the AAP takes the better safe than sorry approach. Like previous post said botulism has "endospores" which are resistent to destruction and will only be destroyed by autoclaving (a temperature way hotter than anything you can cook with.) In the end it depends on what you feel comfortable doing: are you the better safe than sorry type.

Caleb eats Fig Newtons for breakfast. The whole wheat ones, so that makes it OK, right? He also eats cereal bars, I never thought to check for honey though. I had such a hard time getting him to eat (absolutely refused to be spoon-fed) that I was desperate for different things he could feed himself.
