Help me Second Year Mommies, you’re my only hope

We’re at our wit’s end – one of our boys is refusing to sleep. Here’s what’s going on... we put the boys down at the regular time at night without a change to any of our routine. Parker wakes up about an hour and a half after that and subsequently every hour on the hour screaming his head off.

It doesn’t seem to be a teething issue, he’s not hungry, not running a fever and not pulling at his ears, and if we get him out of the crib and let him walk around, he’s FINE – giggling and jabbering like he just woke up from a nap, just a happy as he can be.

All of this screaming on and off during the night and lack of sleep is driving DH, me and his brother crazy. Naps are not an issue during the day and I really can’t think of what else it could be except maybe separation anxiety when he wakes up and doesn’t see either one of us in the room.

Is it time to call the doctor after 6 nights of this behavior?

 

I think it sounds like he wants to play and would do CIO. It never hurts to call the doctor, but it really doesn't sound even remotely like a medical issue to me. He just wants to hang out with mom and dad (I'm sure you are cool!)

(to the bolded part) I know, it just doesn't fit and you’re right, we are cool but getting less and less cool by the day!!! :bubble:

When he goes into these “fits” we do CIO, but sometimes we have to check just to make sure there’s nothing really wrong and that’s when he wants to start playing. I’ve not been this out of sorts since the boys were first born and waking up every few hours to eat.

 

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with that, it would make me want to tear my hair out for sure!
Do you have a video monitor? Maybe if you could look at him on the monitor and see that hes ok you would feel better about not going in his room? Just a thought...

 

I think I would still call my pedi. I really trust her opinion. When my boys have ear infections they show NO signs. It's crazy. I took them in a few months ago b/c I had bronchitis and wanted to make sure they were okay (they started getting runny noses and a little cough). Turned out they both had double ear infections! No fever, crying, ear pulling. Luckily we don't have a copay so I take them just to make sure. You may want to try some serious CIO though if everything checks out.

 

I agree with Megan, when my DS has an ear infection he shows none of the typical signs other then whimpering pathetically. I would call your pedi and see what they suggest and if all medical things are ruled out, then go for CIO again. Big :hug:

 

Million dollars says it's an ear infection. I'd take him right in.

 

I think if he's napping fine but doing this at night then it's probably not a medical issue but it surely doesn't hurt to take him in and ask the ped. I also think that he wants to hang out with mom and dad! I would stick with the cio... Good Luck!

 

Oh, Angela, that sounds miserable!!

I'd take him to the pedi (just to rule out an ear infection or something) and then resort to CIO. I can't imagine how you are feeling at this point!! Here's to hoping tonight goes better! :hug:

We are going through the same thing with DS right now but, he only wakes up a couple times a night it can now be anywhere between 12 am-4 pm screaming & crying. I go in and there is everything is fine. It's been going on now for almost 2 weeks. I called the pedi and they saw him and nothing was wrong. She said that it was a phase that should pass :huh: I just pray now that it will be a short phase because he was such a great sleeper!!!

How long does he nap during the day? I also agree with others, call the pedi just to be sure. :hug:

 

Mine are both doing this. I keep adjusting their sleep environment but I can't figure out what's waking them up. It happens after the sun goes down, so I don't think it's summer/light issue. All I know is it's driving me crazy too. GL!

 

Mine will cry out and we don't go in. I guess we just sort of know their cries and the duration and try to stick with our instincts. Let us know what the Pedi says.
