When do you plan on getting rid of their dummies/pacies?

The boys have a dummy for sleeping but no during the day (if I can hide every one of them). So am thinking about getting rid of them soon - want to do this by the time they are 2 hopefully - so at what age do you plan to do away with them? what is best - cold turkey? Cutting of the ends of the teat? Anyone have any good/horror stories?

My oldest had hers until a month after her 2nd birthday. We cut the ends off a binky everyday and she threw them away because they were broken. When we were out of binkies that worked, they were gone. We had one rough nap but that was it! I plan on doing the same with the twins. Right now they only get them when they sleep. They can keep them until they are 2. I actually have a friend whose DD is turning 3 in August. They took her binkies away when she was 18 months and the child finds anything to put in her mouth and suck on. She took her to the dentist and the dentist said it was messing up her teeth because she was sucking on things that weren't meant to be sucked on. So he suggested he get her binkies again and to try and get rid of them by 4. I was surprised but glad to see the dentist wasn't concerned about them!

I want to do it soon. I plan on cutting off the tips. I heard that helps. We'll see how it goes.

Yes, think I will do as you are going to do sharerc! Cut off tips and discard one by one - nearer to 2 years old I think. Thanks ladies.

At 2 my DD was old enough to understand what "broken" meant. So into the trash she put them. I will say, the very last one was retrieved from the trash. She tried it again. Cried. Threw it away. And protesting napping for about 30 minutes. Poor thing! I HOPE that the twins are as good as she was. I also hope they are potty trained by 2 like she was!

    Um, never?

I don't even like thinking about getting rid of the pacifiers. They are just so important to them right now. I'm not ready yet! But I'm not looking forward to doing it, one day.

    Good luck!

When you say to cut off the end, how much do you cut off? I'm considering just taking a little snip off one corner, but should I take more? My sister said to take a pin and poke a few holes so they can't get the same suction.
I think this is the route we will have to take as DH has no will power to do cold turkey. I finally took the car soothers away and he wants to give them back when we go on holiday!

You just have to cut enough off that they can't be used to suck on. I want to say I cut about a 1/2 inch off the ends.

We did it at 18 months mainly becasue we had them evaluated for speech through EI and the therapists said it needed to go ASAP! So we started by allowing it only for naps and bedtime. We would say to him, go put your binky in the crib like a big boy and he'd walk over and throw it into the crib and was fine w/out it during the day. Getting rid of it at night time wasn't too bad as he would get mad at us for putting him down for a nap and he'd throw the binky out so we'd say, if you throw it out, you don't get it. We went through some screaming fits, etc but it wasn't too bad. One day the binkys just magically dissapeared and it was really no biggie at all...thank goodness!
