First Year-Figuring out the new site!

Hello FY Mommies! If you have any questions regarding the new software, how to do things, please ask in this thread, and us FY mods will do our best to answer your questions! We are still learning too, so we can do it together!

 

thanks for adding this thread! maybe i'm blind, but i can't find the "new postings" tab that i always enjoyed. i just liked browsing through all the other forums and reading up on what was happening everywhere. is that feature gone or can i adjust my settings to get it back?

View New Posts is temporarily disabled, along with search, I believe, because it was slowing the site down quite a bit. This is something they are working on and it will return.

You can still click on the little orange boxes to the left of topic titles, to see which posts, in individual threads, that you have not yet viewed.

Did you know that you can now have a 'status update'? To add yours, click on your name(top right), and 'my profile', and you will see where you can 'update' your status!

Becky, is there a way to change how I see the site? I'm seeing white and gray and it's not very nice. It's much harder for me to navigate etc. Is there a way to change colors and fonts etc??

Admin is still working on colors, but the choices in the new system are limited for now. It will be a while before new ones are created, but don't be surprised if you see new colors when you log on one day! There is no way to change the colors yourself.

 

Thanks for the thread. I had two questions:

1. How do I get my picture to show up on the left of my posts like yours and others?
2. Any idea when the First year handbook will be acessible? I just found out about it and am so excited, but I can't read it. :bump:

 

1. That is called an avatar, and is available to Rewards Members.
2. It will be a bit. We have to go through and replace all of those links since we no longer have the Wiki, just an articles section. I am going to try and work on it next week! Thanks for being patient. Here is the link to the articles section on twinfants. They are just in a random order at the moment.

 

Just wanted to add that the new platform we are using is so new, that not only are we all learning, but there's limited availability for skins and such right now. Admin figures that soon there will be more skinning options available, and we can lose the "grey" look!

Just wondering what this "reputation" thing is all about...how it is achieved and does it have anything to do with the little + and - in the corner of every post?

On the old software we only had the ability to thank the original poster, and on this new software, we now have the ability to thank a person for each post in a thread. The 'reputation' status is just a silly way of counting the thanks. To thank a person for a post, click on the green +, on the bottom right of the post(like I just did for you!).

 

We put in a new look and feel ("skin") on Friday so the coloring should be much more pleasing now. We still have some basic changes you might see from a layout perspective, but the coloring should be somewhat permanent now.

 

We are using the just-released version 3.0.0 of our community software. There will be an upgrade soon (we're hoping early next week) to 3.0.1 which we believe will fix the view new posts and search problems.

 

Everything looks great! I do miss the "top" button on each post - it was sort of handy.

There is a back to the top feature at the very bottom left corner of the page!

 

I think I saw some place that the View New Posts option would be available this week. its still not worling for me. Is it not active yet for no membership members or do i need to update somewhere. If its not active yet anyone know when it might be.

This is my FAV. feature... I miss it so much!

 

The search function is still not available because it was making the site unstable. I'm not sure when it will be available, hopefully it won't be too much longer. I know a lot of people miss it!

 

I have been trying over and over to change my avatar. Every time I do it, it goes so slow and then I get an error message. Any tips?

I have another question too...

Am I the only one whose Emoticons window is cut off on the left side of the screen? I know you can click on the Emoticons button (which is also cut off) and it will list them all. Maybe this is just my computer and I don't know how to fix it?

 

Jenn do you remember what the error msg was that it gave you?

I do know that a new update is coming out hopefully in the next couple of weeks that's supposed to fix some of these issues (like the search feature)!! Hope so!

what should I do to make Personal Message work? I cannot send the PM and cannot recieve one.

First, try deleting all of your old PM's, that has worked for a lot of people. The PM system still has some bugs that should be corrected with the next software update which will be coming hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

 

Where can I look to learn the abbrevations that are frequently used in the forums?

Okay to change my avatar I get the "Webpage time out" screen. I get that when I use the back button on my tool bar too.

Jenn, is your file small enough? It needs to be less than 75kb for an avatar and one of these types of files - gif, jpg, jpeg, png. Other than that, I'm not sure what else the problem could be.

 

Jenn, I was going to suggest shrinking your picture too. I have to make all of mine smaller to get them to upload to TS (either avi or gallery).

 

I had trouble getting a new avi up too. I actually thought it didn't update, but when I logged back in the new one was there. If your file is less than 75kb, it might work even though you are getting an error message.
