One Month Olds Sleeping In Carseat

We have been sleeping our twins in their carseat in the crib for 3 weeks now. They sleep much better in there (they are spitting up projectile so this eases my mind).

Yesterday my friend told me this has an association with SIDS. I almost freaked out. Last night we slept them in their crib but it was a horrible night. They flailed around and fussed and cried all night. I am running on absolutely no sleep this morning. I want to cry. :(

Has anyone here heard about this SIDS and carseat association?

I tried elevating the crib mattress but babies squirm so much, they end up into the rails (even when I tried different levels and lowering almost to flat).

We had the same issue and I had heard about the risk of SIDS. That being said, I decided to continue to let them sleep in their car seats. They only had to sleep in the car seats for a couple of weeks. Hopefully it will be the same for your guys.

I let one of mine do it until he was about 5 months old. There are many things that increase risks of not SIDS, for example not having a fan in the room. If you have a fan on, it lowers the risk.

I think you just need to figure out what risks you want to take and how big are those risks. I had a spit up kid, and I was more concerned about him aspirating on his vomit than dying of SIDS in the carseat. The pediatrician even recommended putting him in the carseat.

The biggest risk seems to be lying on the stomach, but as a new Mom you've got tons of things to worry about. I personally wouldn't make sleeping in the car seat one of them. :)

I hadn't heard of that being a risk factor for SIDS. I think like all the other risk factors, you have to weigh risk vs. benefits & lower what risks you can while still maintaining your sanity (which means you need sleep, too!).

i think you should see why it increases the risk. i think i remember hearing it,s cause it gets hot there and because a lot of babies heads flop forward, but if you do more research to find out what the exact reasons are and make sure you are preventing them, like a bouncy seat might help as well, it wont be as hot and you may get a better head anglde

That's a new one and, honestly, I read how they came to that conclusion and it was kind of ridiculous. There was a tiny number of kids who died of SIDS who were in carseats in the car at the time so they decided to list it as a risk. There was no mention of whether the seat was installed correctly, at a strange angle, etc. And the number of kids in carseats was such a tiny small portion of the kids in the study that I was shocked they even mentioned it. Pretty much all they did was cause a hysteria among parents about carseats for no scientific reason whatsoever.

So, in my opinion, don't worry about it. You can probably find the study yourself by googling it.

After watching one of my 6 weeks olds stop breathing after he ate and was lying flat in his fathers lap, I decided car seats and bouncy chairs were the way to go for us. He didn't even have spit up or vomiting, and looking back on it maybe it was silent reflux. Anyway, the Dr. said to keep them (yes both boys) upright for 30 mins after eating. Well, in the middle of the night that's pretty tough to do. We did carseats at night until they were 4 months old and then started transitioning to a PNP w/ the crib wedge. By 5 months there were in their own cribs and fine. Follow you mommy instincts and do what's best for your babies.

    Ditto!

With our reflux babies i was more worried about them choking on there own vomit than the fact that sleeping in a car seat can increase the risk of SIDS. We alternated them between swings and carseats for 3months, i did worry about there safety in both of them but then i worried about every possible scenario anyway lol Good luck with whatever you decide to do, i hope you all get some rest soon!

I have never heard of a SIDS association to sleeping in car seats. I'd just make sure that their mouths and nose have nothing around them. I know a lot of people who had their newborns sleeping in car seats.

thanks for your feedback! i've moved them back into the car seats, angling them back a little so their heads cannot flop forward. we are now back to sleeping through the night (with them feeding 2xs in their sleep). i feel much better about it. i ensure they are not too warm and we are in their nursery every 2 hours to feed anyway so we watch them closely. i'll be back on here soon enough, trying to figure out how to transition them to the crib after they love their car seats so much. i anticipate alot of crying. :)
