Well, I've been reading this forum since... March, but finally have a topic to post about. BTW- thanks to all of the ladies for their previous posts... it's wonderful to be able to see that I'm not a freak, just pregnant with twins. I don't know anybody who's had twins, so not too many moms I know actually understand that this is pregnancy... stepped up a notch.

So I'm 28 weeks & 1 day and all of the sudden, sleep (which I'm usually pretty good at) is unbearable. Now I realize that aches and pains are a part of pregnancy and carrying twins, it's gonna hurt. But, every night I pile up the pillows (between the legs, under belly, behind back, head) which used to work. Not any more. My hips, specifically my left, but both, are killing me! It's been 3 nights in a row, now, of me groggily waking up to flip sides (who would have believed that I'd have to roll to my back, stop, rest, & roll to my other side... it's always been one fluid motion before!) and as I'm flipping sides, excruciating pain happens in my hips.

Has anybody else had this and found relief? Thus far, I've read online that Scandinavian women tend to have it more (thank God- I am not in a wheelchair because of it!... yet); which holds true for me as my mother is a Scandinavian mutt. Chiropractic care is supposed to help... I have an appointment on Monday. Getting in a pool is supposed to ease the joints- the 2 pools at my apartment complex were closed yesterday (what a waste of a waddle down to the pool!). So, I'm trying, desperately, to be proactive and don't want to take meds all the time... Help.

Sorry to hear that you are suffering.

I've had this for several weeks now, I must flip 30 times per night looking for relief. I dread going to bed! I never thought I'd say that because I ususally love my sleep. The only thing that helps I find is if I take it really easy during the day (mostly lying down), then I feel much less pain in the hips at night. So when I am desperate for sleep I try to do that if I can.

The thing that has helped me the most is sleeping on our couch or in our recliner. I've actually gotten some sleep since I moved my nights onto one of these... maybe because they are firmer than my bed or keep me at a different angle?

Ugh, I hated that. I had that while pregnant too and unfortunately I did not find anything that relieved the pain. I used pillows between my legs, the pregnancy boppy, and would flip while sleeping. Sorry, I know it's not fun.

I have been having trouble sleeping for weeks now and I finally broke down and bought one of those DREAMGENII pregnancy pillow contraptions. I was really skeptical but I used it for the first time last night and it was the first full night's sleep I have had in ages. I felt really secure and cocooned with my back and belly supported. They are quite pricey but I was pleasantly surprised so it may be worth a shot if things are getting desperate.

I actually sleep on TOP of a body pillow for pregnancy...gives me extra softness (with another pillow propping up my belly). It doesn't make the pain go away entirely, but it helps. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm 37 weeks and my hips still hurt at night...and I think it started at like 24 weeks for me. :(

    Hang in there!!!

I just hit 30 weeks and am suddenly having the same hip issue - misery! I got a prescription of Ambien from my OB and it has helped a lot. I am not a pill popper in my non-pregnant state, so I'm not worried about liking it too much, but with a 23 month old and 4 year old, I have got to have some zzzzs!

Hi, I am new here. (20 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins)and I can totally relate to the hip pain. It started a couple weeks ago and I have been thinking about trying a foamy that we use for camping underneath the sheet. The expensive pillow top matress we have it just not cutting it right now! Also it does help to have a pillow wedged up against my back, I think it tilts my hips forward or something. I did some swimming today, but not sure that is helping much. All it did was reinforce the fact that my stomach muscles are gone!

Hello and I am so sorry for you, I am here in Scandinavia and it is very common, I even had it with my son, so I wonder if it's something in the water because I am Canadian. :pardon: But I can tell you what they do to relieve the pain here. They call this pain foglösning which translates roughly as losening of the joints. It feels as bad as it sounds. Anyway maybe some of their methods might give you some relief.

Firstly most of the women are given a supportive strechy belt that they wear during the day to help keep things more stable. Then they can try acupunture at any of the clinics or hospital it is usually an ob nurse that does it. You are given strict orders from your doctor not to vaccume because it is the worst possible movement for the pelvis so the husbands are put on vacumme duty. Try to avoid stairs, and when rolling over in bed keep your knees together I know that sound impossible but it really makes a difference. Try to avoid lifting one leg up at a time so don't stand up and put your pants on this can irritate things. Sit down on the side of the bed and put your toes in your pants and then pull them up. My midwive / doctor said if to try not to agravate it during the day nights will become better. It sucks and I hope that you find some relief soon. Cheers Julia a Canadian in Sweden

THANK YOU!!!!! I will give anything a try- & I've always been interested in acupunture, so that'll be fun.

I like the "no vaccuming part" especially. I'll be sure to let my husband know.

I have had terrible hip pain since about 20 weeks - at first it was just at night, but then I could barely walk! I've been getting physio therapy for it and it has made a WORLD of difference. I still wake up often in the night and need to switch sides due to pain, but it isn't nearly as bad as it was before the physio. My therapist only works on pregnant women, so she is highly skilled and knowledgable re our issues. I recommend trying to find someone like that. Good luck!

Hmm... I would love it if my insurance would go for it... when I called about a referral to the chiropractor, they were LESS than helpful ("Nobody will work on you b/c you are pregant"... yeah, the first doc I called was happy to make an appointment with me - pregnant and all!) I wonder if I'll have to be virtually incapacitated for them to pay. I will ask, though, at the next doc appointment.

    Thank you for the suggestion-

I forgot to add one more thing, Try not to squat! When I was pregnant with my son, I thought this was a no- brainer, I mean when you don't have kids how often do you get down in a squat, but if you have kids, then it's like 1,000 times a day every day. Cheers :)

Im with you on the hip pain too....before I got PG hubby and I bought a temperpedic bed (memory foam)its been a life saver!

I also fractured my pubic bone during to delivery of my 15 month old DD,and the pain now is terrible,so my whole pelvic/hip region shoots with pain.My docs have me on VICODIN,and without it I couldnt walk.I had to take it with my last pregnancy as well, its better not to suffer, and lose sleep really.
    Good luck HUGS J
