Do your kids in beds have real bedding?

We moved the girls into what was DH's office, and well, it kind of looks like an office. I never really got to decorating the room. There's a built-in bookcase that I can't really do much about, the room is painted a red wine color. I did let them paint one part of the wall to make it their own. When they got beds, I let them pick out what color sheets they wanted, and they picked yellow and orange, which doesn't go with the wine color at all. They don't have proper comforters. Ainsley sleeps with the comforter from her crib set, Bea a blanket my aunt made. They are kind of attached to them, so not sure how I'll pry those away. Oh, and to top off this mish-mash, their curtains are a greenish-grey, from our old master bedroom.

I really need to get them a nice little girl room. I don't feel like painting the wall, so I would like something that goes with the red wine. How do I pry the old blankets away from them? Especially Bea, she will not sleep under anything else.

I never decorated their room either. It was freshly painted when we moved in, a sort of peach color, so that's OK. But the rug is a weird Navaho-type woven one I bought on Craiglist and the only wall decoration is a huge bulletin board I put up to hang their art on. And the "curtains" are the dark green flannel sheets we tacked over the windows when they were 3 months old.

They do have official bedding -- I bought them each two sheet sets and a comforter when we moved to big kid beds. They didn't choose any of it, though. I bought the comforters on Overstock.com, one set of sheets at Target (really nice, actually), and the other on clearance at Nordstrom. They use their crib quilts on top of those comforters, and their crib pillows with the little farm animals on them.

I don't care that it doesn't match, and neither do they.

We had a simple room for the girls when they were babies with the thought that when they went to big girl beds, we would make it girly. I went all out and painted walls, got bedding, etc. and I love their room. This is the bedding we bought and we painted their room a light lilac color.

We got their bedding from Beyond Bedding and they have SO many options!! The only thing to note is that their comforters are pretty thin, so it would definitely require a second blanket for winter time.

You can search their site for bedding that matches a particular color.

Here is one with red in it:

Yes, all 3 of mine have their room painted and their own bedding. I actually got Emilie and Trevor's twin bedding at Costco, they are really nice quilts. :good:

I bought matching bedding for the girls and my mom also gave me two quilts she made for my sisters and and my bunk beds when we were little. Well, one of my girls likes the new quilt and one likes the quilt my mom sent so in the long run they don't have matching bedding. That being said they room is a room that we added on for them so it is pink and very "girls bedroom".

I would think if you just painted the room that would be enough.

Oh - and the girls were very attached to the blankets they used to use in their crib so I just let them have those as well as the twin size quilts. You can probably try to phase them out by saying they are in the wash or something.

I could not decorate their nursery while pregnant (on bedrest). So it was pretty simple, my mom painted it a pale yellow and we had bedding that I picked out online that was peach, green, and yellow. It was cute, but not all out like I might have done if I could have gone out and shopped.

So their big girl room I went all out on. It has bright pink walls, off white furniture, and it's a flamingo theme with some flamingo pictures, a shelf with stuffed flamingos on it, their names above their beds in painted/decorated letters, and their duvet covers are black with little pink flamingo print all over it. underneath that they have blankets their grandma made them. They have a set of flamingo sheets and a set of striped sheets that match the room. I painted the ceiling sky blue with some clouds.

And they have a fish tank with 3 hearty goldfish. Oh, and I have a thing for flamingos, so the things I've gotten as gifts are in their room (like a cool flamingo lamp).

That lady bug stuff is cute. I think the right yellow or green would look good with wine too.

I am just about to move my boys into our office to make room for the new baby. We are not going to re-paint - the walls are a sort of pale green. We don't have a lot of money to spend on decorating, so I am planning to buy textiles and other items (curtains, rugs, bedding, lamps, etc.) at Ikea. They have a really playful collection of kids' things and the prices are great. The quality is fine for us - it's totally kid-friendly stuff. If you have an Ikea near you, I'd have a look. The collection of girls' bedding has a lot of colours in it and might go well with your wine-coloured walls. You should be able to personalize their rooms with new curtains, a rug, lighting, bedding for both girls, and even some nice cushions for less than $150, which is what you'd pay for ONE set of bedding ON SALE at Pottery Barn Kids!

I've gotten the decorating bug lately so bad, it's not even funny! But, there's nothing I can do. :(

For their blankets, I would probably let them keep them & just fold them up in the morning. It might be a good way to introduce making their beds. I can't really think of anything to go with red wine off the top of my head. Maybe cute little bugs & lady bugs? Minnie Mouse?

I think a bookshelf would be fairly easy to girl-ify. If you don't want to paint it, maybe find some cute girly looking picture frames. My 2 LOVE having pictures in their room. Maybe some white wicker baskets to put toys in.

    Have fun; I'm jealous! :)

One of each here so not real easy to match. They do have "real" bedding though. I got them comforters from Pottery Barn Kids with stripes (one girly, one boyish). They have pictures on the walls (kids clowns). Not a lot of real decorating. The walls are white (we had just painted the year before they were born). They have shears and blue curtains swags because I like blue and wasn't going to change. When we separate them, they will get their own decorations. Good luck and have fun. As for the blankets, we put the comforters on the beds in the morning and fold up their blankets and place them on the end of their beds. It's neat and no fights!

I was thinking the same maybe not get rid of their favorite blankets but have them fold them up when they get out of bed or have a blanket/comfoter or some type of cover to go over the whole bed to cover up the sheets and their blankets and at night they just fold that down to the bottom of the bed.

My kids rooms are all painted (my girls room is pink and purple, those are the colors they picked when they switched rooms) and my sons room is blue. None of my kids have bedding sets. They have sheets that they picked out. In the winter my one daughter has a white blanket that was my grandmothers and my other daughter has a fleece multicolor blanket that was mine, they also have a few quilts that my dh's grandmother made them that has a few different colors in them. They also have a dark blue shade so their room is darker at night and at nap (when they took naps) and they have a black curtain over that. My son does have a Thomas the Train blanket that is on his bed that he has to sleep with and he just got that for Christmas and it happens to match his blue room but there is no decor at all.

I'm struggling with the same thing! We can't move them into the third bedroom - it's smaller than their room and we'd like to save that for the hypothetical third baby. Since they'll be sharing, we want them to have the big room.

I can't repaint their nursery - DH and my BFF did a full-wall Noah's Ark mural on it. It's beautiful, and I know they'd both be devastated if I got rid of it.

Whatever you choose, could you just put the new quilts/comforters over top of their beloved blankets? Maybe just having them on the bed would be enough, they wouldn't have to be seen. :pardon: Love the bedding Michelle linked with the ladybugs on it!

I would check Overstock.com for kids' quilts -- I got a fantastic knock-off of the Land of Nod doll clothes quilt there a few years ago for Nadia, and it was less than half the cost. For her new room, I found a quilt set at Sam's Club that was vibrant and very cute, so the doll clothes quilt is being passed to Karina.

And, I want to do Kevan's room in a vintage baseball theme, but decided to do neutral bedding in case he wanted something else. Also, sports bedding can be so tacky. I just bought this today from Overstock:

    http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Puzzle-Twin-Quilt-Set/4093269/product.html

It's neutral enough that it will go with almost anything, and I thought the puzzle print was interesting, and something he won't outgrow within a year or two. Then, Land of Nod is having a great summer sale, and I found vintage baseball and football prints, 24x36, for half price. I bought some of their sports pennants, too, which are inexpensive. (I love the Land of Nod and Pottery Barn Kids looks, but am too cheap to completely decorate a room from there.)

With your girls' beloved blankets, why don't you just put them on the beds underneath decorative quilts or comforters? I prefer quilts because they're easier to wash, and I put blankets on the bed underneath them. If you get some new curtains to match, it will really tie the room together...

Thanks for all the ideas! I think having them pick out new bedding and curtains will be nice for their birthday. They really don't care about their hodge-podge room, but I cringe looking at it. I think we can keep the old blankies as lovies and putting them under the new comforter or quilt (might go with quilts, they are more versatile) is a good idea.

This is what we've done. They all have bedding (none of it goes with any of the others though!) but have their lovey blankets that they sleep with. I personally could care less what they sleep under or with (within reason of course) as long as they sleep!
