If both are sick....

I know, I know this sounds like a horrible question but I was thinking if both of my girls exhibit the same exact symptoms is it really important to take both or can I (or have you?) just take in one (my husband still has off since we returned early and thus the other could stay with DH, otherwise it would be out of the question)?

We traveled to Costa Rica and returned on Tuesday. Both of the girls have diarrhea pretty bad and just want to make sure it isn't anything more serious.

What do you think?

 

I would call the ped and ask them if they needed to see both. Chances are they will want to see them both to be certain they are sick with the exact same thing and could weigh them for correct dosages for meds.

 

Oh it definetly depends on what it is and what the treatment is...If they medicate the one baby, you could just ask what to do with the other, they may or may not want to see the baby...like today I went to Urgent care for my ds, if it turned out he had strep i had planned on asking for an RX for other baby..turned out just viral, so I didn't see the need to have his brother checked..I would definetly ask over the phone in your case, I almost bet they need to see both..hth

I always take them both b/c I don't have another option, but I agree that they will want to weigh them for correct doses. Call first. They may be able to help over the phone w/out bringing either in.

 

Let me preface this by saying that their pediatricians and pediatrician's office are, well, old family friends.

But I only make an appointment for one, I'll bring them both in, they'll only charge for 1, take a quick look at 2, and write the Rx for double what kid 1 needs. (unless it's a well visit, then I get charged for both). I love my pediatricians.

 

I would take both.

 

I take both just to make sure it's the same thing. Plus my ped will not write a prescription for brother for the same thing (if they need meds) without him being there. So for me it saves making two trips.

 

I must confess I'm guilty of not always taking both because I was paying out of pocket and the clearly had the same thing. However, there are many many things they could have gotten in Costa Rica that would give them both diarreah, so I'm not sure if in this case if you can say that they both have the same thing. And, your ticker is run out so I don't know how much older than 1 year they are. Like others said, medicine dosage may not be the same, but the older they are the more likely its the same.

 

If both are sick, I'd probably take them both if possible, just to make sure they have the same thing. But I have often taken one who was sick, only to have the other one get sick with identical symptoms a few days later, and in that case I don't take the second one.

My ped is usually willing to call in a prescription (if necessary) for the second one without seeing her. Also, a lot of times the ped says it's just a virus, but tells me what to watch for (labored breathing, broken skin, whatever) that would mean she needs some kind of treatment. Then I can watch the other one for the same symptoms.

Me too.

 

I took both in ($30 each) to be told that it is a virus and it should run its course. I was pretty sure going in that no medicine was going to be prescribed but its more of the peace of mind knowing both were checked.

Next week is their well baby visits. Oh well, I guess having to pay double is the territory of having twins.

Glad you got some peace of mind and that your Doctor and you and smart enough to not give/take antibiotics for viral stuff. I hope they are better soon. It is so hard to have sick little ones :hug:

 

I usually do take them both in. Sometimes they have the same thing, but sometimes they won't. The last time, Sarah had strep, and Allison had a double ear infection. Allison never got the strep and Sarah never got an ear infection. I usually always take them both in if they are both sick. If one is sick, then I will ask for a script and hold on to it in case the other gets sick as well, that way I don't have to spend the extra co-pay.
